Vivie Chapman, 98, North Haven
Vivie Ericsson Chapman, 98, of 17 Pool Rd., North Haven, wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died Feb. 17 at the Connecticut Hospice, Inc. She was the loving wife of the late Joseph Parker Chapman, who predeceased her in 2004. Mrs. Chapman was born in Kenilworth, New Jersey, on Nov. 23, 1913, daughter of the late Frans and Gerda Sandquist Ericsson. She received a bachelor’s degree from Upsala College, East Orange, New Jersey, and after raising her family, she worked as a librarian for the North Haven Library from 1956 to 1962. She was a member of the Apollo Singing Society, the Mayflower Society, and the North Haven Congregational Church, where she was a member of the choir and women’s club. Mrs. Chapman was an avid crocheter and reader; she enjoyed music and loved to travel with her husband; and she was an excellent baker (especially her apple pie and chocolate chip cookies).
She is survived by her beloved children, Judith Greist of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Joan Melillo and her husband Fred of North Haven, and Janet Fusco and her husband Tony of North Haven. She was the devoted grandmother of Barbara Latrell of Colorado, Beth Ann Connors and her husband Robert of Wallingford, Brian Melillo and his wife Tara of Northford, Jennifer Elia and her husband Stephen of Wilton, Brenda Tyrrell and her husband Michael of Wallingford, and Michael Fusco and his wife Allison of Medford, Massachusetts. She is also survived by her cherished great-grandchildren, Jay Latrell, Sydney Elia, Emma Connors, Brooke Melillo, Kate Melillo, Alex Elia, Megan Connors, Jace and Samantha Melillo, Ryan Elia, and Mya Tyrrell. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Allan Greist; her grandson, Michael Greist; her brother, Lennart Ericsson; and her sister, Margaret Jarett.
Funeral services will be conducted at the North Haven Congregational Church on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the North Haven Center Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Connecticut Hospice, Inc., 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405; the Hospital of St. Raphael Foundation, 1450 Chapel St., New Haven, CT 06511; or the Hamden Health Care Center, 1270 Sherman Lane, Hamden, CT 06514.
