07/01/2011 12:00 AMJohn F. Hogan, 89, formerly of Clintonville Rd., North Haven, died June 29 at the Highlands Health Care Center in Cheshire. He was the husband of the late Mary Moriarty Hogan. Mr. Hogan was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on June 19, 1921, son of the late Daniel J. and Bridget Moynihan Hogan. A 1939 graduate of Cathedral High School in Springfield, Massachusetts, he later attended Bay Path College in Massachusetts. John served his country faithfully in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later worked as a locomotive engineer for Amtrak for 45 years until his retirement in 1988.
John was past grand knight and fourth degree member of the San Salvador Council of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Railroad Anchor Club, the American Legion Murray/Reynolds Post No. 76, and the Irish-American Community Center of East Haven, and he was a parishioner and a former Eucharistic minister at St. Barnabas Church.
John’s family thanks the nurses and staff at the Highlands Health Care Center in Cheshire and the Masonicare Hospice Team for their compassionate and loving care.
He is survived by his three children, Michael J. Hogan and his wife Andrea of Northford, Daniel J. Hogan and his wife Pamela of Colchester, and Maureen Roth and her husband Paul of Bethany; five grandchildren, Jonathan Hogan, Justin Hogan and his wife Susan, Christopher Hogan and his wife Kailyn, and Meghan and Eric Roth; and three great-grandchildren, Charles, Kennedy, and Jaylyn Hogan. He is also survived by his brother, Daniel J. Hogan and his wife Mariette of Ansonia; his sisters-in-law, Lillian Pyne of East Haven and Kathleen McKeon of West Springfield, Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary McKernan.
His funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., North Haven, on Friday, July 1, at 9:30 a.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Barnabas Church at 10 a.m., followed by burial with full military honors in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Cathedral High School Tuition Assistance Fund, 260 Surry Rd., Springfield, MA 01118.
