06/16/2011 12:00 AMOlympia A. DeVivo Gates, 87, of North Haven, died June 9 at the Hospital of St. Raphael. She was the wife of the late Wesley E. Gates. She was born in New Haven on Aug. 27, 1923, daughter of the late Antonio and Olympia Lucci DeVivo. Olympia, known to her friends as “Ollie,” was an active member of the North Haven Senior Center. She was also an avid gardener, and she loved music, cooking, and doting on her grandchildren.
She is survived by three children, Kenneth W. Gates and his wife Susan of Morristown, New Jersey, Donna DaCosta of New Haven, and Richard W. Gates and his wife Cynthia Snyder of San Diego, California. She was also survived by seven grandchildren, Thomas DaCosta and his wife Amy, and Jonathan, Emily, Chloe, Laura, Natalie, and Spencer Gates; four siblings, James DeVivo and his wife Rosemarie of Wallingford, Armando DeVivo of Florida, Carol Sexton of North Haven, and Florence Bilides of Massachusetts; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by four sisters, Susan Sorrentino, Mary Merrick, Amelia Candido, and Anna Rossetti, and two brothers, Henry and Albert DeVivo.
Family and friends are invited to attend a mass of Christian burial at St. Frances Cabrini Church on Saturday, June 18, at 11 a.m., and are also invited to attend committal services immediately following the mass in the In Memoriam Cemetery. There are no visiting hours. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
