Bernard J. “Barney” King, 89, Old Saybrook
Bernard J. “Barney” King, 89, of Old Saybrook, died peacefully on May 31 at the Middlesex Hospice Unit in Middletown. He was the loving husband of 61 years to Winnie King. Born in Port Chester, New York, on July 20, 1921, he graduated from Bellows High School in Mamaroneck, New York, and he received his BS in engineering from the University of Alabama. Barney also served his country in World War II in Italy and France where he was a captain platoon leader in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, to whom he was devoted, Julie (King) Engle and her husband John of Peterborough, New Hampshire; Barney King, Jr. and his wife Lori of Harrison, New York; Greg King and his wife Janis of Benicia, California; Chris King of Wellesley, Massachusetts; and Jill (King) DePalermo and her husband Rob of Old Saybrook. He was known as “Pop Pop” to all his grandchildren, who will remember him for his gentle, loving ways, Stephanie (Engle) Saboda and her husband Kirk; Becky (Engle) Holzenverger and her husband Ramon; Ben Engle, Kristen (King) Alonzi and her husband Dan; Kelly King; Michelle King; Allison King; Amanda King; A.J. King; Abigail King; Catherine King; Meghan King; Nick DePalermo; Julia DePalermo; and Jay DePalermo. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 4, at 10 a.m., at St. John’s Catholic Church, Main St., Old Saybrook, followed by burial with full military honors in Riverside Cemetery, Old Saybrook. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Barney’s name to the Weiss Hospice Unit, Middlesex Hospital, Middletown, CT.
