James A. Plunkett, 84, Guilford

James A. Plunkett, 84, a long time resident of Guilford, died May 20 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the loving husband of 59 years to the late Ann Virginia Shea Plunkett.  James was born in Derby on May 9, 1927, son of the late Andrew and Agnes Sullivan Plunkett.  He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Villanova University in 1949.  He had also served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a long time communicant of St. George’s Parish, where he was a past president of the Legion of Mary.

James had a lifelong career in the insurance industry until his retirement from Allstate in 1993, after which he was a consultant for the Delaney and Triplett Law Firm.  If he wasn’t on the golf course, he was tending to his garden or planning the next family outing.  James loved his children and was proud of their accomplishments.  His greatest joy was celebrating life with his family and friends. His positive outlook sustained him until the end, where his family was by his side.  His grace, dignity, and infectious smile will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by four children, James W. Plunkett and his wife Patricia of Guilford, Dr. Timothy J. Plunkett of Southport, William F. Plunkett of Madison, and Elizabeth Ann (Betsey) Plunkett of Stony Creek, Branford.  He is also survived by a grandson, James Timothy Plunkett.  He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Plunkett.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. George Church, 33 Whitfield St., Guilford on Wednesday, May 25, at 10 a.m., followed by burial in Alder Brook Cemetery, Boston St., Guilford.  Friends may call Tuesday, May 24, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford.  In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember him with a memorial contribution are asked to make donations to Our Lady of Grace Monastery, 11 Race Hill Rd., Guilford, CT  06437.  For more information or to send an online condolence for the family, please visit www.GuilfordFuneralHome.com.
