John Belden Comstock II, 86, Middletown and Essex


John Belden Comstock II, 86, died at the Middlesex Health Center on Jan. 17 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was the husband of the late Joan Morrison Comstock. Born in Meriden on June 20, 1924, he was the son of the late Gregory Jamison Comstock and Elizabeth (Singellton) Comstock. John was a sales engineer, the owner of John B. Comstock Real Estate, and a general contractor in Essex. He had also been a friend of Bill’s for 45 years. John was an avid builder of ship models, including the Yankee Boy on display at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme. He also wrote books, Evolution; the Comstock Genealogy, and Industria; a project to bring industry back to Connecticut.

He is survived by his son, James B. Comstock of Southport; his daughter, Elizabeth Comstock Hartman and her husband Timothy of Columbia, South Carolina; a niece, Anne Harwood Tuttle and her husband Jamie of Middletown; a nephew, Greg Harwood and his wife Laura of Middletown; and a nephew, Rick Harwood and his wife Karen of Maryland. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 11 great-nieces and great-nephews; and two great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.  He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Comstock Harwood; his son, John Beldon Comstock III; and his daughter, Catherine Comstock Wilska.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at St John’s Episcopal Church in Essex. Burial will take place in the family plot in Riverview Cemetery, Essex. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, Main Street, Essex, or to the American Heart Association, or to the National Parkinson Foundation. The Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, Centerbrook, is in charge of arrangements.
