Daniel Jerry Zanardi, 90, Chester
Daniel Jerry Zanardi, 90, of Chester, died Oct. 17 at the Chesterfield Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was the loving husband of 59 years to the late Betty (Stalsburg) Zanardi. A life-long resident of Chester, he was born in Chester on Nov. 28, 1919, son of the late Antonio Andrew and Theresa (Baglio) Zanardi. Dan enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in Africa, Italy, France, and other areas of Europe until February 1945. On Dec. 12, 1945, he was united in marriage to Betty, with whom he shared his life until she predeceased him on Nov. 22, 2004.
After returning home from the war, Dan went to work for his father, along with his brother and sisters, in the coal and firewood business. Dan later became the sole owner of A.A. Zanardi Company, Inc., which today is owned and operated by his sons, Dean and Dan.
For 11 years, Dan served as Chester’s 2nd selectman. He was also a proud past president of the Rotary Club and was a board member of Chester Bank and Trust. Dan was an avid golfer and a member of the Clinton Country Club and the Forest Country Club in Ft. Myers, Florida.
He is survived by three sons, Dean and his wife Denise of Killingworth, and David (his love) and Daniel, both of Chester. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Donna Zanardi; two sisters-in-law, Grace Stalsburg and Connie Zanardi; six grandchildren, Brett and Paul Zanardi of Killingworth, Kristen Zanardi Bouchard and her husband Matt of Windham, New Hampshire, Dawn Zanardi Clark and her husband Brian of Matthews, North Carolina, and Alexandra and Chloe Zanardi of Chester. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, John, Silvio (Babe), and Arthur (Bud); two sisters, Pauline and Florence (his twin); and his brother-in-law, Robert (Bob) Stalsburg.
A graveside service with full military honors will take place on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m., at Fountain Hill Cemetery, High St., Deep River, where relatives and friends are invited to join the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Antique Veterans, 6 George Dr., Old Saybrook, CT 06475. The Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, Centerbrook, is in charge of arrangements.
