11/25/2024 04:11 PMThe Town is planning on forming a committee to aid with the development of the Senior Center portion of the development at the former Abraham Pierson School.
At the end of September, Clinton residents voted to sell the former Pierson School property located at 75 East Main Street to developers Xenolith Partners and HOPE Partnership for $500,000. The developers seek to turn the school into a mix of affordable housing and a senior center.
Per a presentation on the proposed plan, the developers wish to turn the old school into 50 apartments to be marketed preferably toward seniors aged 62 and older. As part of the plan, the gymnasium would be leased back to the Town for $1 for use as a senior center. The Town will be responsible for the programming and operational costs of the senior center.
At a Town Council meeting on Nov. 6, council member Mike Shove inquired if the council could start a committee that could aid in the creation of that senior center. Town Manager Michelle Benivegna said that she would begin meeting with relevant staff to discuss the building. Shove was asked to be a council liaison on the committee.
After the meeting, Town Council chairperson Carrie Allen said that the council would defer to Benivegna to put together the committee.
Reached for comment after the meeting, Shove explained the idea came to him because the council set up a similar committee for proposed upgrades to the Henry Carter Hull Library.
“My interest in this is the same as with the library; a portion of this project is going to be allocated to town space and town workers, so I think we should talk about what we want to see there,” Shove said.
Shove pointed out that relevant department heads, such as the Town Planner and the Town’s Senior Program Coordinator, would offer input as well.
The developers of the property said earlier this year that they anticipate starting construction in Nov. 2025 and completing it in the summer of 2027.
