Carney Wins Sixth Term in 23rd District
Voters from Connecticut’s 23rd General Assembly District have reelected Republican Devin Carney over Democrat Jane Wisialowski to represent them in Hartford. Following the election, Carney and Wisialowski weighed in on the election results.
The 23rd House District includes the towns of Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Lyme, and Old Lyme. Since 2015, Carney has represented the district. According to the unofficial tallies reported in all four towns, Carney received 8,044 total votes (51.5%), while Wisialowski received 7,582 (48.5%).
“I want to thank the voters of Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook for entrusting me with their support for another term,” Carney said. “I have worked incredibly hard over the last 10 years, and my positive message of economic opportunity reducing energy costs and keeping local control carried the day.”
“My opponent ran a strong race, and I give her credit. As the only Republican to win in the district, it could have very easily gone the other direction. But voters were able to recognize my experience, dedication, and integrity and I received many crossover votes. I’ve truly given my all these past 10 years, and it has been the honor of a lifetime. I look forward to getting back to work for the amazing people of the 23rd District,” Carney continued.
While campaigning for election, Carney mentioned affordability, expanding access to trade jobs, and public safety as core issues he’d like to work on.
Wisialowski released a statement that, in part, said, “Obviously, we are disappointed with the outcome, but with your help, we ran a race that we can be proud of. We came closer than any other candidate has to defeating a five-time incumbent. We knew it would be an uphill battle, but I believe we sent an important message to my opponent – the people of the district are watching how you vote, and you need to better represent our values.”
