11/11/2024 07:49 AMDue to some issues with tabulators, results for Branford’s Nov. 5 presidential and state elections experienced a delay. Numbers appearing in this story were posted with the Connecticut Secretary of State’s Office as of Nov. 7.
In Branford’s 102 State Representative race, Democratic incumbent Robin Comey came away with the win, with a reported 7,265 total votes, or nearly 54%. Republican challenger Ray Ingraham received 6,259 votes, or just over 46%.
Comey has now held the 102nd seat for consecutive two-year terms since winning her first term in the 2018 election. On Nov. 8, Comey thanked her constituents in a post at her Facebook page, noting, “I’m genuinely touched that the people of Branford have reelected me as their state representative. I’m excited to continue my work, bringing real results for our community. I’ll be building upon what we've already accomplished and continuing to fight for an economy that works for everyone, funding for our public schools, and quality care and support for seniors. Thank you!”
On Nov. 7, based on results being reported, Ingraham posted at his Facebook page, “Congratulations to Robin Comey . The unofficial results show that I did much better this run but will not win this election. I thank all of you for your support over the last eleven months, it’s been wonderful getting to know you all a bit better, looking forward to continue representing you on Branford’s RTM.”
Zip06/The Sound met up with Comey and Ingraham on Election Day, Nov. 5, as they greeted voters outside polling places at properly designated locations.
“People are very excited about their chosen candidates; and we are cautiously optimistic,” said Comey. “My favorite part of the campaign season is going to door-to-door... I get out there and I talk to people and hear about how much they appreciate the work that we do up in Hartford, and it makes me feel like I’m in the right field.”
Ingraham said he appreciated the support he had felt throughout his campaign.
“It’s been a great experience. People have been extremely friendly,” said Ingraham, who will continue to serve as an elected member of Branford’s Representative Town Meeting (RTM) representing District 5.
Whether as state representative or RTM member, Ingraham said his vote on behalf of his constituents follows the desires of the people he represents.
“When you’re making a decision, it’s about what the people in Branford want. My vote isn’t my vote. That’s just not part of my vocabulary,” he said.
With state seats up for election every two years, voting takes place during presidential or gubernatorial elections, and Ingraham said he recognized that the majority of Branford voters tend to support Democratic presidential or gubernatorial candidates in such election cycles.
“I’m a purist; I know the make-up. If people vote straight party line, which it’s very difficult not to in a presidential year, the numbers aren’t there for me,” said Ingraham.
Among the presidential candidates on the ticket, the majority of Branford’s voters, nearly 57%, supported Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, on the Harris-Walz ticket, with 9,918 votes. Just over 42% of Branford voters pulled for president-elect Republican Donald J. Trump on the Trump-Vance ticket, with a total of 7,250 votes.
In the State Representative race for the 98th District, which represents a portion of Branford and Guilford, incumbent Democrat Moira Rader won reelection and received 1,942 votes in Branford, nearly 57%. Republican challenger Richard DiNardo received 1,468 Branford votes, or 43%.
Incumbent Democrat Christine Cohen won the overall vote among towns she represents for State Senate District 12 (which also serves the towns of North Branford, Guilford, Durham, Killingworth, and Madison) and received the majority of votes in Branford with 9,665 votes, about 57%. Challenger, Republican Paul Crisci, earned 7,379 votes, over 43%, in Branford.
Connecticut U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D, District 5) won his bid for reelection district-wide and received the majority of Branford voters’ support, with 10,133 votes, about 60%. Republican challenger Matthew M. Corey earned just over 39% of Branford’s votes, with a total of 6,672.
U.S. Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D, District 3) also won her bid for reelection district-wide and received the majority of voter support at the polls in Branford. DeLauro earned 9,846 votes, about 58%, in Branford; while Republican candidate Michael Massey garnered roughly 42% at the polls in Branford, with 7,213 total votes.
