Popular Service Station Closes its Doors

MADISON

Madison is mourning the closure of a downtown Mainstay. On Oct. 11, Hammonasset Service Station announced that it had closed its doors for the final time on its Facebook page.

For more than 25 years, the Hammonasset Service Station has helped countless people in the community. The announcement comes via their website and Facebook page, where the Burger family has written the reason for the station having to shut its doors, including the loss of two of its best mechanics.

“The decision to close our family service station has not come lightly,” the Facebook post reads. “Economic challenges, shifts in the industry, and losing both owners Doug and John in 2020 have all played a role in this difficult choice. But what has always remained constant is our appreciation for the incredible relationships we’ve built with each and every one of you.”

Up until the day they decided to shut their doors, the station had always been known for its excellent service, winning awards in 2019 and 2023 for “Best Mechanic on the Shoreline.” Many people took to Facebook and other social media to express their sadness and reflect on the excellent service and friendly atmosphere the station was known for.

Most importantly, the owners themselves spoke about the many years of the shop’s service, seeing this as not only a somber moment for them and their family but also reflected on their work, as well as thanking their loyal customers for sticking by them through the good as well as the rough times.

“Though we may be closing our doors, the memories, the friendships, and the community spirit that we’ve fostered will live on in our hearts forever,” they wrote. “Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey with us…We hope that you will continue to support other local businesses that serve our community with the same dedication and care that we have strived to provide.”
