DHHS Named Blue Ribbon School
Daniel Hand High School (DHHS) is a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School. The U.S. Department of Education announced the 356 recipients of this prestigious award, which recognizes schools that excel in academic performance or make significant strides in closing achievement gaps among different student groups, on Sept. 23.
DHHS is the only high school in Connecticut to receive this award in 2024. The school was nominated by the Connecticut State Department of Education earlier this year.
“Daniel Hand High School being nominated by Connecticut based on its overall academic performance and then identified by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School is simply incredible news,” said DHHS Principal Anthony Salutari Jr. “This special recognition confirms the ongoing dedication of our impressive faculty and staff and is a compliment to our students for their hard work and commitment to their education. I am proud to work with such remarkable students and a professional faculty and staff who never lose sight of what is best for our students. Daniel Hand High School is a special place.”
The U.S. Department of Education recognizes all schools based on student performance data, including assessment results, student subgroup performance, and graduation rates. Schools are recognized in both or either of two performance categories: Exemplary High Performing Schools, schools among the top performers in their state as
measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests, and Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools, schools that excel in narrowing achievement gaps between different student groups and the overall student body. DHHS was recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School. Madison Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Cooke said this award is a testament to the work of the school’s administration, staff, and students.
“Daniel Hand High School has long been recognized as a top high school in Connecticut and - for that matter - the nation, “said Cooke. “We are very proud of this blue ribbon acknowledgement as it further recognizes the amazing work of our faculty, staff, and administration. More importantly, it highlights the success of our students and the wonderful learning environment they help create.”
Each nominated school submits a comprehensive application detailing its school culture, programs, assessments, instructional practices, professional development, leadership, family, and community involvement.
“The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona in a press release. “The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation’s students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child.”
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Every year, the U. S. Department of Education seeks out and celebrates great American schools, schools demonstrating that all students can achieve high levels. Schools are eligible for nomination after five years. The coveted National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content. The National Blue Ribbon School flag gracing an entry or flying overhead is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning.
