Members of the North Haven Junior Gardeners recently harvested produce and played a fun game of tag and chase in the “Garden of Eatin’” in town. The kids did a great job of picking all the produce, which included butternut squash, yellow squash, string beans, and eggplant, along with lots of different kinds of tomatoes, basil, parsley, oregano, and mint.
Logan watered the lettuce and kale sprouts. The tiny plants need so much help to survive in the hot sun with small animals looking for a tender plant to eat. The kids also watered the potatoes. Some of the plants have spuds showing at the base of the plant—a good sign for the coming harvest. The potatoes were covered with soil, so they don't get exposed.
Mackenzie and Regina spread shavings of Irish Spring soap near the lettuce and kale. The soap has a scent which rabbits and chipmunks do not like. Hopefully, this will help keep the animals away from the seedlings.
The watermelons are growing really big and getting ready to be harvested and cut open for a watermelon party. There are also be potatoes and butternut squash which will soon be ready.
After that, it was fun time in the garden with lots of giggles, laughs, and a game of tag and chase. The members of the North Haven Garden Club find it rewarding to see how this group of kids, who were once strangers, are now having a great time together. Their camaraderie is amazing, they have great work ethics when it’s time to work, and they know how to have old-fashioned fun when they are done.
