Press Release from Cindy Golia

On Sept. 21, members of the North Haven Garden Club and the Junior Gardeners gathered at the Faith United Methodist Church’s “Garden of Eatin’” for what might have been their last large harvest of the season. The gardens are slowing down with their production of fresh veggies, but the pumpkin vines and a few squash plants are producing huge flowers, and the vines are hardy.

The Junior Gardeners were excited to harvest the potatoes and felt happy with the amount they had grown. It was time to pick the watermelon, too. They cut one, and it wasn’t quite ripe enough, but the bigger one was red, juicy, and sweet. They ate nearly the whole watermelon, sending home just a few pieces.

The seedlings in the back garden are sprouting, and club member Ms. Lee watered them well. The parsley is slowing its production, too. The kids picked the rest of the ripe tomatoes, along with a large bunch of string beans, eggplant, butternut squash, and yellow squash.
