East Haven Police Officers Experience Two Incidents of Unprovoked Violence in a Week

Press Release from East Haven Police Department

On the morning of Aug. 14, at approximately 4:20 a.m., the East Haven Police Department (EHPD) experienced an incident in which a white or silver sedan approached a patrol sergeant from the rear at a high rate of speed and flashed their high beams, seemingly flagging a sergeant down for assistance. When the sergeant slowed down and pulled to the right to see what the motorist wanted, the suspect vehicle rammed the police cruiser twice. The sedan then hopped a curb and conducted a U-turn, traveling westbound on Foxon Road at a high rate of speed. The officer lost sight of the vehicle, which appeared to head toward New Haven. Officers saturated the area, but they did not locate the vehicle.

This is the second incident involving unprovoked violence toward officers in East Haven in the span of a week. The first incident involved another vehicle approaching an officer in a parking lot. When the vehicle got close enough to the officer, an occupant within threw feces at his cruiser and taunted him to chase them. The officer decided not to pursue the vehicle and instead radioed in the vehicle's last-known location.

Incidents involving cars taunting officers to chase them and then coming back around to find them if they aren’t chased are also increasing.

While this matter remains under investigation, the information which the EHPD has received and continues to receive is that the individuals responsible for these acts and this behavior are juveniles, sometimes in their early teens. The EHPD’s plea is for parents to be aware of what their children may be doing during the overnight hours.
