Public input is sought on a preliminary Northford Center Connectivity Study intended to bring about improvements for traffic and pedestrian connectivity and circulation among the Northford village center’s Route 17 and Route 22 corridors. North Branford residents are encouraged to attend a public meeting where they can learn more, and provide their input, on a Northford Center Connectivity Study intended to bring about improvements for traffic and pedestrian connectivity and circulation among the Northford village center’s Route 17 and Route 22 corridors.

The public meeting is set for Tuesday, Aug. 27, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stanley T. Williams (STW) Community Center, 1332 Middletown Avenue. The preliminary study can be viewed at the town website

As previously reported, progress on the effort to address the area began in June of 2023 with a Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) one-day Connecticut Connectivity Road Safety Audit (RSA) of the Route 22/Route 17 intersecting areas of the Northford Village center.

Next, with a $50,000 grant from the South Central Regional Council of Governments (SCRCG), the preliminary Northford Center Connectivity Study was completed by BL Companies. The study, which reviews existing conditions, allows the Town to apply for a 2024 CT Connectivity grant of up to $800,000 to implement improvements in the area.

The study evaluates the area’s major roadway characteristics, existing traffic operation, sources of traffic delay, traffic safety, access management, land use and zoning (including North Branford’s Plan of Conservation and Development guidelines), environmental and natural resources, historically and culturally significant resources, and multimodal (pedestrian and bicycle) accommodations.

The study notes the public outreach meeting will help to obtain feedback which will assist “...in the development and refinement of recommendations that fit the character and future vision of the Town of North Branford.”

On Aug. 13, the Town of North Branford notified residents that public input is sought on the Northford Center Connectivity Study. The notification was posted at the Town website and issued as the following press release:

“The SCRCOG and the Town of North Branford, in cooperation with the CTDOT have initiated the Northford Center Connectivity Study to evaluate existing challenges and opportunities throughout the study area.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a comprehensive transportation plan for various intersections along CT Route 17 (Middletown Avenue) and CT Route 22 (Clintonville Road / Forest Road) and prepare conceptual engineering drawings for improvements along the length of the corridors. The improvements would seek to improve connectivity and circulation throughout Northford Center.

A preliminary study has been completed and is available on the Town website northbranfordct.gov for review, and a public forum will be held on August 27, at the STW Community Center gymnasium at 1332 Middletown Avenue in Northford, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Residents are encouraged to attend, participate, and give feedback.“
