Shore Publishing/Zip06 Team Recognized for Excellence

The Shore Publishing/Zip06 team of journalists has once again received accolades for excellence from our peers. The Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists (CTSPJ) announced the winners of its 2023 Excellence in Journalism Awards on June 6, recognizing our reporters, photographers, and columnists with 11 honors, including four first place awards.

Shore Publishing competes in the Hyperlocal category, which includes both weekly print publications and online organizations.

Chief of Photography Wesley Bunnell dominated the photography category, earning two first place awards: Feature Photo “Keeping it In the Pocket” and Sports Photo “Valley Regional Baseball Defeats Old Saybrook.” He additionally picked up two second place awards: Feature Photo: “North Pole Magic” and Sports Photo: “Hand Boys’ Hoops Earns Win Versus Guilford in SCCs.”

Living Editor Pem McNerney received two first place recognitions in addition to a second place and third place victory. In Health Reporting, McNerney placed first with “When There Are No Answers” and snared a first place win in Local Reporting for “Yes, In My Backyard.” She received a second place win in the Business category for “Why Buy a Book When You Can Buy the Whole Store?” and a third place honor for Sports reporting with “Calling All Men.”

Senior Staff Writer Pam Johnson took a second and third place award, earning recognition in the Local Reporting category for her article “Branford Food Pantry Braces to Assist Residents as Extra SNAP Benefits End.” Johnson earned her third place honor in the Religion Reporting category for “Helping to Celebrate 100 Years of St. Stephen’s AME Zion Church.”

Shore Publishing columnist Liz Egan earned a third place honor for her General Column “Navigating Loss.”

Away from the CTSPJ Awards, columnist Kathy Connolly was honored by GardenComm: Garden Communicators International. Connolly received the 2024 Media Awards Silver Laurel Medal of Achievement in the Newspaper Columnist category for her column “Green and Growing.” Connolly’s recognition comes as a national award earned from a field of 126 entries in 39 possible categories. Her column will now compete for gold recognition.

Please join me in congratulating all those who won recognition and all my colleagues who may not have been selected but whose talent and hard work make this news organization excel, day in and day out.
