Five-Term Tax Collector Resigns

The Board of Selectmen is poised to appoint a new tax collector after receiving the resignation of long-time tax collector Michele Nuhn. Nuhn's last day will be Friday, July 5.

The resignation was announced in a posting on the town website, and according to the town charter, the BOS has 45 days from the time the office becomes vacant to make the appointment.

Nuhn, a Democrat, was recently reelected to the position in the November 2023 election. At the time of her resignation, she will have served for 17 years, almost to the day, after her appointment as tax collector in 2007. The BOS appointed Nuhn on the recommendation of the Killingworth Democratic Town Committee (DTC) to replace former Tax Collector Ruth Patrick, who retired on June 30, 2007. Voters selected Nuhn for her first full term later that year in the November election. Tax collectors are elected to four-year terms.

According to the town charter, before the BOS can appoint Nuhn's successor, "the Town Committee representing the party of the vacated official shall have 30 days in which to propose an appointee." The charter further states that the appointee must be a member of the same political party "if at all possible."
