Press Release from Guilford Garden Club

If you have noticed 10 new trees on Broad Street and Fair Street, you can thank the Guilford Garden Club for funding these 10 trees. The club continues its dedication to planting and nurturing the tree canopy in town through its “Greening of Guilford” Tree Program.

Working closely with Guilford’s Tree Advisory Board, Kevin Magee, the town’s tree warden, selects appropriate trees and planting sites. The Guilford Garden Club Committee then provides funds to purchase, plant, and maintain the trees. This effort relies on donations from private citizens, town businesses, groups, families, club revenue, and community organizations. The Guilford Garden Club has been fortunate and appreciative to receive generous grant donations from The Guilford Foundation.

The tree planting and watering process, coordinated through the Guilford tree warden, involves the Parks & Recreation Department with the Public Works Department and Bartlett Tree Company. It’s a cooperative project to beautify Guilford!

The “Greening of Guilford” tree fund originated in 2006 to plant trees on Route 1 to beautify Guilford. Later, trees were planted at Rollwood Park and the Guilford Green, as well as Broad, Whitfield, Fair, River, Water, and State streets. Hundreds of trees have been planted since the tree fund’s inception. The Guilford Garden Club continues to add trees as the tree warden feels the need to replace or add trees in Guilford. Trees are also planted as memorial trees in memory of a person, a group, or an individual.

Donations may be sent to Guilford Garden Club, Box 608, Guilford, CT 06437, earmarked for the “Greening of Guilford” Tree Program.
