The Daytime Gardeners selected Sierra Ciak as the winner of its $500 Merit Scholarship Award. The Scholarship Committee presented Ciak with the check at the North Haven Library West Garden, which is one of the town gardens designed and maintained by the club. Ciak just completed her freshman year at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where she is studying conservation biology. She has been passionate about biology all her life and pursued four years of wildlife biology at Lyman Hall High School.
Ciak has already had experiences with invasive plant removal, environmental cleanups, game camera usage, goose banding, and plant identification. She participated in an environmental knowledge competition sponsored by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. Ciak’s team won first place at the state level, and she won first place individually, thus taking the team to the nationals, where she received gold ranking nationally.
Ciak worked with the Cheshire Pollinator Pathway group to complete a project on pollinator surveying. This experience increased her interest in pollinators and insects, the plants with which they interact, and the habitats they call home. On Tuesday, July 23, Ciak will present a program for the Daytime Gardeners about her work with pollinators. This program is open to the public and will be held at the North Haven Recreation Center at 7 Linsley Street from 11 a.m. to noon. Please register by calling 203-239-1557. A guest donation of $5 is appreciated.
