Water Main Project to Begin on Whitfield

Construction will soon get underway on a $1.5 million water main project to improve water quality and add fire protection to residents in the area of Whitfield Street.

The project, expected to begin the week of June 10, is being undertaken by Connecticut Water Company and will install approximately 3,000 feet of water main, along with three new fire hydrants, impacting Whitfield Street from Water Street to Frances Road and Old Whitfield Street from Frances Rod to Pages Lane. The new main will replace pipe that, according to the company, is more than 100 years old.

“Investing in drinking water infrastructure improves water system reliability and enhances water quality,” Vice President of Service Delivery Rose Gavrilovic said in a statement. “When customers turn on the tap they expect high-quality water, without interruption. This investment in new water main will serve customers for decades to come.”

Crews will begin working in the area the week of June 10 and are expected to wrap construction in September. Work will take place between 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. According to a press release from Connecticut Water Company, area residents have been notified of the project and will receive advance notice of any scheduled water service interruptions related to the project.

The $1.5 million project is being funded through the Water Infrastructure and Conservation Adjustment (WICA) on customer bills. The company aims to replace more than 1% of its more than 1,850 miles of water main annually through the program, investing more than $60 million in water treatment, water storage, and pipelines in 2024.
