Raindrops never impact the high turnout of so many who annually join in the Stony Creek Memorial Day events, and they did not stop the crowd which gathered with the Stony Creek Fife and Drum Corps on Monday, May 27. As they do each year, the collective group headed out from the Creek's flagpole up the hill to the Stony Creek Cemetery.

Arriving at the cemetery, Anthony "Unk" DaRos welcomed everyone and reminded all just what "freedom" entails. This year, he referenced and quoted President Ronald Reagan: "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction..."

DaRos also listed each specific war, veteran's name, and designated military service of each service member laid to rest in the Stony Creek Cemetery. Numerous names resonated with attendees, bringing home the truth and sadness. DaRos also introduced faith representatives who individually shared their prayers, including those from Catholic, Protestant, Evangelist and Jewish religions.

Additionally, local vocalists and poets of all ages recited and/or sang with authenticity to commemorate and honor those who served. Flowers were placed on markers throughout the cemetery as a loving, closing gesture.

Stony Creek thanks “Unk” for years of loyalty to Branford's Stony Creek Memorial Day Ceremony, as the 2024 event served as the last year he will “steer the ship.” Thank you, “Unk"!
