North Branford Adopts $61.83M Town Budget, 1.41 Mill Rate Increase

Following the annual budget referendum question vote on May 14, North Branford has adopted the $61,838,729 Town Budget recommended by the Town Council for fiscal year 2024-2025. The new budget sets the North Branford’s new mill at 35.93 mills; an increase of 1.41 mills from the current 34.52 mill rate.

Voters turning out for North Branford’s annual budget referendum question did not meet the 15% threshold required by Town Charter in order for any changes to the budget to be actionable by the council. Just 2.5% of the electorate, or 227 of 9,225 registered voters, turned out at the polls on May 14, according to North Branford Town Clerk Lisa Valenti.

The budget includes appropriations of $33,901,724 for the Board of Education and $21,422,115 for all other town government operations; $325,500 for capital improvements and $415,000 fund balance for capital. The budget also services $5,774,390 in debt expenses (bonding) for the fiscal year. The budget will apply $725,000 from the fund balance toward revenue. A taxation response of 98.5% is projected to raise $49,059,856 in revenue. North Branford’s fiscal calendar year begins July 1 and ends June 30.

On May 14, North Branford registered voters responded to the 2024 Budget Referendum question, “Shall the Town Council recommended budget of $61,838,729, which will require a mill rate of 35.93 mills, be adopted?”

At the town’s three polling places, voters indicated whether they approved of the budget, rejected it as too high, or rejected it as too low. Tallies registered a total 36 voters voting to accept the budget. A total of 171 voters rejected the budget as too high; and 20 rejected the budget as too low.
