Press Release from Old Saybrook 2024 Memorial Day Parade Committee

The Town of Old Saybrook will host its annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27 with a special highlight featuring a military transport plane flyover of the parade route provided by the Connecticut Air National Guard between 10 and 11 a.m. This year's Memorial Day Parade will feature two ceremonies: a dockside naval ceremony at 9 a.m., followed at 10 a.m. by the parade, which will finish at the Veterans Memorial Monuments on the Town Green on Main Street.

The day's events will begin with the dockside naval ceremony for all participating units assembling at 8:45 a.m. at the Saybrook Point Pavilion parking lot located at the end of College Street, with a wreath-laying ceremony on the Connecticut River at 9 a.m., rain or shine.

The parade assembly will be at 9:30 a.m. at the Stop & Shop parking lot off of Elm Street. The parade will then step off promptly at 10 a.m. from Elm Street. The parade will go straight across Route 1 to Main Street and then proceed to the Veterans Memorial Monuments on the Town Green, where a memorial program will be conducted.

In case of the parade's cancellation due to rain, the memorial program ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the Old Saybrook Fire Department headquarters at 310 Main Street. This year, Gil Simmons, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and chief meteorologist for WTNH, will serve as the master of ceremonies.

Once again, by popular demand, Lennell Holloman, a U.S. Army National Guard veteran also known as the Boston Post Road/Route 1 “Flag Man” seen proudly waving the American flag, has agreed to participate in the Old Saybrook 2024 Memorial Day Parade.

All veterans are invited to attend, and rides in the parade route are available for those unable to march. Those interested should contact Max Sabrin, Old Saybrook 2024 Memorial Day Parade Committee member, at 860-395-5550.
