Guilford Agricultural Society Hosting Community ‘Ag Day’ on May 11

Press Release from Guilford Agricultural Society

On Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Guilford Agricultural Society will host a Community “Ag Day” on the Guilford Fairgrounds to celebrate Guilford’s agricultural heritage and to inaugurate the two new barns which have been raised on the fairgrounds with the help of a grant from the Connecticut Department of Agriculture. This is a free, community event.

The event will include a number of 4H groups, as well as Future Farmers of America schools, including the Sound School for agriculture in New Haven. The Sound School is a prominent provider of education in agriculture to many communities which don’t have access to local farming. There will be educational displays and demonstrations in animal husbandry, bee pollination, and maple syrup production, as well as a pedal tractor pull and an agricultural equipment touch for kids. There will also be a farmers’ market with plants for sale, providing great gift opportunities for Mother’s Day, which is on the next day, Sunday, May 12.

At 11 a.m., there will be a ribbon cutting to celebrate the construction of the two new barns. The ceremony will be attended by the state’s commissioner of agriculture, the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, and local and state agricultural and resource agencies. The grant liaison representative for the Connecticut Department of Agriculture will present two plaques to the Guilford Agricultural Society celebrating the two new barns.

The displays and demonstrations will highlight Connecticut’s agricultural heritage, featuring participatory activities for adults and children. The Farm Museum on the fairgrounds will be open to view antique farm equipment with interactive exhibits, and Bishop’s Orchards will be holding an educational forum on sustainable agriculture.

There will be a food truck and some agricultural entertainment, along with animal displays, gardening and planting tips for spring, and much more.
