02/29/2024 12:12 PMOld Saybrook’s search for a new Superintendent of Schools has come to an end. On Feb. 21, the Old Saybrook Board of Education unanimously voted to appoint Christopher Drezek to the position.
According to a press release from Old Saybrook Public Schools, Drezek, who currently serves as the superintendent in Enfield, will begin his work in Old Saybrook in May.
“I am extremely humbled and honored to be the next Superintendent of Old Saybrook Public Schools. Old Saybrook is an amazing community of dedicated staff members and talented students. My family and I could not be more excited to join a district committed to ensuring all students reach and exceed their highest aspirations,” Drezek said in a statement.
In an interview with the Harbor News, Drezek said that while he has enjoyed his time in Enfield, the Old Saybrook opportunity was too good to pass up.
“I’ve had a great 20 years in Enfield, and I always sad it would have to be an absolute dream job for me to leave, and the Old Saybrook job is that,” Drezek said.
Drezek said that while he and his family are familiar with the town and have some ties to the area, he was also excited about the community’s commitment to the school system.
“The community has a lot of pride in its school system, and it really supports their schools. That was a big draw for me,” Drezek said.
While Drezek doesn’t start in his role until May, he said he will spend the time getting to know the community and stakeholders between now and then. As for a first course of action, Drezek said he would be developing an entry plan that addresses the needs of students and continues doing what the town is doing well.
“It’s a district that does a lot of things well. The needs of students are changing rapidly, and I want to make sure the kids have everything they need,” Drezek said. “I’ve heard nothing but glowing things about the teachers and staff in town. My family is just as excited about the move as I am.”
The search for a new superintendent began last fall when Jan Perruccio announced she would retire from her position in March 2024. Perruccio had served in the role for over a decade.
“I know I have enormous shoes to fill replacing Jan,” Drezek said.
In a statement given as part of a press release announcing Drezek’s hire, Karen Brodeur, chair of the Superintendent Search Committee, wished Perruccio well and complimented her successes as superintendent.
“Jan has been an outstanding Superintendent for Old Saybrook schools, and we have been so fortunate to have had a leader with her expertise and exemplary character. Her most recent achievement was being named the Connecticut Superintendent of the Year in 2023,” the statement said in part.
Dr. Krista Bauchman, the principal at Old Saybrook Middle School, will serve as superintendent until Drezek’s start date.
