Press Release from Griswold Post 79

Griswold Post 79 of the American Legion in Madison is honored to have performed its ”5000” Military Funeral Honors on Jan. 22 at Beaverdale Cemetery in New Haven. The number 5000 stems from the inception of Post 79 performing duties from 2003 under the command of Hank Allain and George Smith to the present day working with the Connecticut Army National Guard under the command of Post 79’s Wally Stone. With this being a great privilege for Post 79, the majority of its honors take place at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown.

Military Funeral Honors features a trained squad of veterans that perform a three-rifle salute and “Taps.” This rifle salute is followed by the folding and presentation of the American flag to a family member by active-duty personnel from the branch of the service of the deceased.

The Honor Guard squad that performed the “5000” Military Funeral Honors consisted of Jon Worley (bugle); Don Hauser (rifle squad), Donna Farrell (rifle squad), and Charlie Corso (rifle squad); and Wally Stone (Honor Guard commander).

Other Military Funerals Honor Guard members from Griswold Post 79 are Dannielle O’Neill, Barry McDermott, Robert Hanson, Tom Walsh, Lyle Cubberly, Bill Porter, Ken Pouch, and Dick Pryor.
