02/21/2024 06:09 PMOn Feb. 7, the East Haven Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC) approved a petition for a text amendment to “allow registered Family Child Care Homes and Group Child Care Homes to be treated in the same manner as a single or multi-family dwelling,” according to the application’s language.
The petition was approved in light of Public Act No. 23-142 that was passed by the Connecticut General Assembly and concerns “home-based childcare centers, not like a commercial one,” said zoning enforcement officer Joe Budrow.
Likely to be approved to be PZC, the new zoning regulation “simplifies the zoning approval process for people to establish a home based daycare” in East Haven, said Budrow.
“They're still overseen and regulated by the state with regards to how they're set up inside, but on the local side, it just simplifies their approval process,” Budrow said.
According to the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood, there are 22 registered Family Child Care Homes located in East Haven. The approval of the text amendment would ease the application process for people looking to enter the field of childcare, as pointed out to the PZC by land use attorney Jennifer Coppola.
“I think the state is trying to encourage more people getting into childcare,” said Budrow.
