Colchester Republican Duigou Announces Challenge for 33rd Senate Seat
Though the November state elections seem far off, one candidate has already declared his candidacy. Republican Jeff Duigou is running for State Senator for the 33rd District.
The 33rd District includes the towns of Clinton, Westbrook, part of Old Saybrook, Chester, Colchester, Deep River, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Lyme, and Portland. Currently, the district is served by Democrat Norm Needleman, who has held the seat since 2018.
Duigou is a Colchester native who has worked in the environmental engineering field, according to a press release.
“For 18 years, he served as a licensed environmental professional, helping clients with compliance with federal and state environmental regulations,” the release states in part. Duigou retired as the vice president of environmental sciences position at Eagle Environmental, Inc. Over the course of his career, Duigou had a hand in projects that connected to affordable housing, energy, veterans’ housing, training facilities, schools, and university improvements.
Per the press release, Duigou wanted to run for office to bring “fresh, family-focused ideas” to the state. Duigou said in a statement that he would work with both sides of the aisle to lower the tax burden and pass laws supporting law enforcement and first responders.
“I will bring a law-and-order, business-friendly, pro-environment perspective to the State Capitol. As a conservationist, I believe we should be good stewards of the abundant natural resources we enjoy here in Connecticut. I will be a voice for sustainability, preservation, and public health,” Duigou stated in the release.
“ At the same time, I understand that innovation, research, trades, and small businesses are the backbone of our economy. We have a tremendous opportunity to create high-paying careers and fill available jobs, yet our small businesses are unable to fill tens of thousands of positions,” the statement continued.
Duigou also pledged to reduce government mandates and improve the business climate in the state.
“My brand of leadership is straightforward and honest. I will be appealing to Democrats, Independents, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters of all ages, and I will work diligently to earn your support in November. I am listening to you, and I will work collaboratively and tirelessly to improve everyone’s quality of life,” Duigou said.
