Branford Resident Charged with Animal Cruelty

Press Release from Branford Animal Control Department

On Aug. 15, the Branford Animal Control Department received a frantic call from concerned residents that there were newborn kittens crying in a dumpster. There were four kittens in total. One was deceased upon arrival, one was in critical and struggling to breathe, and two were actively crying.

All four kittens were found soaking wet due to downpours of rain that day. They were outside of a plastic garbage bag and at the bottom of the dumpster. All kittens were immediately transported to the veterinarian.

Only one kitten is surviving at this time, and that kitten has been reunited with its mother. The animal shelter has custody of the mother and the remaining kitten.

On Oct. 23, after a thorough investigation by Animal Control Officer Pamela Weiss with the assistance of the Branford Police, Denzel Hunter, 30, of Branford, was arrested and charged with two counts of cruelty to animals, in violation of CSG 243-27(a). He was taken into police custody and held on a court-set $25,000 bond with a scheduled Oct. 25 court appearance.
