Perruccio Announces Plan to Retire as Old Saybrook Superintendent

OLD SAYBROOK

On Sept. 27, Old Saybrook Superintendent Jan Perruccio announced she would retire from her position in March 2024. A search firm will be used to find a replacement.

For 10 years, Perruccio has been leading Old Saybrook’s school system. Now, that time is coming to a close. A press release on Sept. 27 announced Perruccio’s upcoming retirement.

“I am retiring because I have completed 36 years in the profession and loved the work. I want to leave while I am still bringing my best me to work every day. It takes a lot of energy to be a good superintendent. Days and nights are very long,” Perruccio said.

With Perruccio leaving, the Board of Education (BOE) will begin a search for her replacement shortly.

“The Board of Education will be engaging an executive search firm to conduct the search process. They hope to have named a firm in the coming weeks,” Perruccio said.

In a statement, BOE Chairman Trevor Nichols said, “Words cannot describe the profound sadness I felt when Mrs. Perruccio informed me that she would be retiring in the spring as superintendent of schools. Since her arrival almost 11 years ago, she has dedicated her life to Old Saybrook Public Schools, and everyone has benefited. This is a huge loss for the Old Saybrook community. She is a ‘once-in-a-generation’ person who simply cannot be replaced.”

Before coming to Old Saybrook, Perruccio previously worked as an assistant principal in Wallingford. During her time in Old Saybrook, she helped implement two district strategic plans, which, according to a press release, helped “… increase transparency, accountability, and public understanding of the district’s goals.”

She also spearheaded efforts to increase the technology as well as equipment upgrades to the schools, according to the release.

“Old Saybrook Public Schools is a great place to work and a wonderful place in which to lead. The community supports education, the Board of Education supports the superintendent, the staff is talented, and the students are the best! I am going to miss everyone,” Perruccio said.
