St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal Brings Home Guilford Fair Blue Ribbon

Bernadette Canning, the 2024 Grand Marshal for the Greater New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade, brought the luck of the Irish to this year’s Guilford Fair, held Sept. 14 through Sept. 17.
The Branford resident submitted her family’s 70-year-old Irish Soda Bread recipe. Fair judges gave the submitted loaf top scores in the “Family Recipe” Specialty division, awarding Canning with a Blue Ribbon.
The Guilford Fair, and its producers, The Guilford Agricultural Society, have been a mainstay of Guilford life since 1859. Town historian Joel Helander wrote about the Fair as “part of the spirit of old New England.” In that spirit, the theme of the Guilford Fair, and the Fair Parade was “Guilford Treasures – Old and New” with the Fair itself, and the beautiful fairgrounds skirting Guilford’s Historic District, being treasures both old and new.
The Greater New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade is Connecticut’s largest single day spectator event attracting more than 325,000 people to the streets New Haven each year. The Parade is a longstanding tradition in the New Haven community, and the members of the Greater New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee volunteer to ensure the tradition continues.
