School Year Statement from Superintendent

Press Release from Guilford Public Schools

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I write today to welcome you to the 2023-’24 school year and to share with you my excitement and my optimism for this coming year. With new students, teachers, and leaders joining us this year, our community continues to grow in exciting ways, and this school year holds continued promise and opportunities for us all.

As we embark upon this school year, I want to remind us all that our schools will continue to value and to celebrate the differences that our students and their families bring with them every day. In our community, schools, and classrooms, we will respect and honor those differences and help our children to recognize, value, celebrate, befriend, and support those who are different from themselves in any of the many and varied ways in which we all differ from each other. Our schools will continue to be places of belonging. Every child and every adult from our community is a valued member of our community who belongs in the Guilford Public Schools, and I ask us all to remember that the sense of belonging is not a limited resource. Helping everyone to know that they belong here makes us a stronger community, and it costs us nothing.

We will also continue to partner with the Guilford Police Department and to make both technological and facility improvements to ensure that our schools are physically safe places for all. Teachers will continue to focus on academic rigor with high expectations for all students and the social and emotional health and wellness of all students in their classrooms. They will continue to work in collaboration with each other, with instructional coaches in all our schools, and with their principals to create learning opportunities that are rigorous and equitable. Counseling and resources are available to any student in need of support.

Professional learning this year will focus both on that sense of belonging that I have already mentioned and on the development of rigorous thinking classrooms. In alignment with our Portrait of a Graduate, we will continue to grow students who are adaptable learners, responsible collaborators, effective communicators, critical thinkers, global citizens, and empathetic young people.

Welcome to a wonderful year,

Paul Freeman, Ed.D.
