Disc Golf Course Opens at Clark Park in Old Saybrook

OLD SAYBROOK

Looking for a new way to have some fun and spend time outdoors? Cedar Swamp Disc Golf Course is now open at Clark Community Park in Old Saybrook.

Disc golf is a game that combines Frisbee and golf. A golfer is given a disc and has a certain number of throws to reach the “hole,” which is a stand with a chain basket sitting on top.

At Clark Community Park, located at 170 Schoolhouse Road in Old Saybrook, there are actually now two 18-hole courses on the property. The courses are open year-round from dawn to dusk and are free to play. “There’s plenty of space to have fun, and the only thing people need is their own disc,” said Old Saybrook Parks and Recreation assistant Director Jonathan Paradis.

The course, which is the first of its kind in Old Saybrook, took about 18 months to build.

“The department has always been interested in building a course there, but Old Saybrook resident Rob Lemire has been instrumental in getting it done with designing the course and everything; he deserves a lot of credit,” Paradis said.

The course held its official grand opening on Aug. 9 though Paradis said some people had already been playing it.

To celebrate the opening, the park will be hosting a family day on Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 4:30 p.m. The free event will feature demonstrations from volunteers from Action Sports.

The course gets its name from the lake that is on the property, which Paradis said provides some challenges in addition to aesthetics.

“There’s two holes that go over the lake that make for tricky shots and also a cool feeling of going over the water in addition to worrying about losing a disc in the water,” Paradis said.

Paradis said that there are hopes to do annual leagues and tournaments on the course in the future as the course becomes more popular.

“We have the information on our website, and there is also a website people should check out called www.Udisc.com. That site has pictures and information on the course and is a phenomenal website for people interested in disc golf,” Paradis said.
