Temporary Indoor Pickleball Courts Coming to Former Walmart Site

Indoor pickleball is coming to the former Walmart site through May 2024, according to town officials. While Target is expected to permanently occupy the space, residents will have a chance to play indoor pickleball until May 2024, when the lease expires.

According to building official Kimberly Norman-Rosedam, two individuals have signed a lease with the property managers to allow the temporary installation until at least May of next year. Norman-Rosedam said there are still a few minor details that need to be resolved between various town departments but that there appears to be no issue that will prevent the temporary facility from opening soon.

“The applicants recently signed a short-term lease to be in the former Walmart space, and they are hoping to bring pickleball into that space,” said Norman-Rosedam. “The town is working with them. Both myself and other town departments are working with them to let them know what they need regarding all codes and town ordinance to ensure everything be code compliant.”

Norman-Rosedam said that this type of lease agreement is fairly standard and did not anticipate any hurdles or significant obstacles with permitting this particular proposal and that the ordinary safety and zoning process is underway.

“We, and obviously the fire department, just want to make sure that there is proper egress so folks can get in and out safely,” said Norman-Rosedam.

Norman-Rosedam added that the leasers were eager for the opportunity to bring the sport into the facility.

“They said they are pleased to bring pickleball to meet the rising demand for it in Guilford.”

First Selectman Matt Hoey said he is glad residents will have additional courts to play this popular sport.

“I’m thrilled that this is happening here. It will be such a great addition and, while temporary, will provide our residents with greater access to play, what appears to be, the fastest growing sport in America,” Hoey said.

According to officials, the lease is from August until May of next year. There is no announced opening date for the facility, and usage and or membership information was not available.
