The Killingworth Historical Society (KHS) and the Parmelee Farm held a private celebration to laud the efforts of volunteers who were instrumental in funding and raising the new barn and display facility on the property. The new barn is designed to house some of the museum’s artifacts that have been tucked away in storage for decades due to a lack of space.
According to KHS President Ken Wodatch, the new barn is critical to the organization’s mission to protect and preserve Killingworth’s legacy.
“Part of our mission is to increase public awareness of the town’s history. Killingworth’s agricultural roots make Parmelee Farm and our campus a perfect place to reconnect with that past,” said Wodatch. “The KHS had outgrown its storage capacity for artifacts a long time ago, to the point of having a detrimental impact on the ability to properly display many of them. The barn checks a number of boxes for us, expanding use of the farmhouse, increased storage, display space, and it’s a natural fit for the property.”
According to KHS officials, the barn will be open to the public on Open Farmhouse days from June through September as well as for its popular Christmas Fair. The Parmelee Farm Museum and hiking trails are located at 465 Route 81 in Killingworth. For more information and a list of upcoming events at the farm, visit, www.parmeleefarm.org
