New Mural in Children’s Area at Blackstone Library
Press Release from the James Blackstone Memorial Library
The Blackstone Library is pleased to announce the installation of a new mural in the children’s play area. With funding from a bequest of the estate of Linda J. DeLaurentis, submissions of mural ideas were requested in the fall of 2022. Submissions were voted on, and the top choice was from Brooke Sheldon of Guilford. She and her partner, Lena Fransioli, painted the mural onto canvas in their studio and then brought it to the library on June 9, when it was hung like wallpaper.
“We are so happy with how the mural came out. It is gorgeously done and offers a delightful experience as you gaze around. You spot new details each time you look,” says Katy McNicol, library director. “The design definitely exceeded our expectations, and we know it will be enjoyed by many for years to come.”
The mural includes a quote from author Neil Gaiman, “A book is a dream you hold in your hands,” a variety of whimsical and dreamlike elements, and is intended to welcome children and families and inspire their imaginations. To view the mural, visit the Youth Services department any time the library is open: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
