Etched in History: NBHS Class of 2023
As the only graduating class to begin their senior year in the former high school building and complete it in the new academic facility, the North Branford High School Class (NBHS) of 2023 was recognized for its place in the school’s history during commencement exercises June 9.
Marching onto the school field in their caps and gowns of Thunderbird purple, the Class of 2023 took their seats at center field to hear from several speakers and share in some special recollections as they celebrated graduation.
The NBHS Class of 2023 experienced the educational pangs of learning during the pandemic as well as enduring the physical changes and challenges of navigating learning during the Town’s high school construction project, which recently entered it into its second and final phase.
Valedictorian Alexander Shadman said they “soared over” the transitions faced as students.
"I will not bore you with the obstacles our class, as a whole, has encountered and soared over. This very moment is not about those instances that sent us into turmoil. Instead, this day is about how we, as a class, are now more experienced and more prepared for the challenges we will face as we step off this field. The resilience we have built over the past few years will not only allow us to seize the opportunities that might make us nervous, but will also allow us to recover and grow stronger when faced with these barriers,” said Shadman.
As they go forward, Shadman encouraged his classmates to “seize the day.”
“The world that we are merging into is full of opportunities for every type of person. We are no longer bound to the walls of this school. I ask each one of you to take chances, take risks and take control of your lives,” said Shadman. “When approaching a new opportunity in your future that might seem a little daunting at first, repeat these two words: ‘I can.’ Because, as T-Birds, we all can.”
Additional top students of the Class of 2023 are Salutatorian Grant Bogardus and Essayist Anuska Patel.
In her commencement remarks, Class President Cecelia D’Amico recounted the Class of 2023’s shared experiences over the past 13 years as North Branford students, helping them to, “...remember some of our best times.” D’Amico described her classmates as, “...confident, funny, intelligent and greatly successful individuals.”
“We owe this success to North Branford. Our small town and deeply rooted beginnings have shaped us as individuals, but also as a group,” said D’Amico.
The Class of 2023 was cheered on during the ceremony by a large crowd in the stands and graduates’ parents seated on the field. The event featured NBHS instrumental performances including "How Far I’ll Go,” as well NBHS select choir performances including “The Road Home.”
NBHS principal Todd Stoeffler said this commencement marked a significant moment in Thunderbird history.
"Class of 2023, you’re a unique group and a special group. You are, and will be, the only graduating class in the history of the school who started their senior year in the original building and concluded their senior year in the new building. This will never happen again. Your group is etched in the history of the school,” said Stoeffler.
In addition to unique accomplishments of individuals, groups and teams, Stoeffler noted the Class of 2023 leaves NBHS with “...multiple graduates moving on to competitive universities across the country and in the world, including institutions in the Ivy League.”
Stoeffler also recognized the Class of 2023 for demonstrating “...an ability to lead, achieve and contribute in a humble fashion.”
“You and the entire staff demonstrated remarkable flexibility and determination during a time of change that has spanned the majority of your four years. It would not have been possible to transition into our new facility without the conscientious efforts of our staff and seniors throughout the year. Our transition was exciting and at times stressful; and presented an unprecedented level of responsibility on individuals and groups...we offer our sincerest thanks to our dedicated staff and congratulations to our very accomplished seniors,” said Stoeffler.
Noting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s reflection, “...intelligence plus character, that is the true goal of education,” Stoeffler told the graduates their NBHS experiences have provided a strong foundation as they move ahead.
“It is our hope that you continue to pursue the dreams and goals in a manner aligned with your family values, and also in the manner that you moved successfully through North Branford High,” said Stoeffler.
Board of Education chair Shawna Holzer encouraged the graduates to be leaders by showing grace and perseverance, and to remember their community will always welcome and support them.
“On your journey to graduation, you’ve been inspired, encouraged and motivated by teachers, adults and peers. Some of you have also been the target of cruelty, frustration and humiliation,” said Holzer. “Mighty T-Birds, these experiences shape you. You cannot know the sweetness of success without feeling the darkness of the valley at some point. Hold on to the pieces of life that bring you joy, that teach you a lesson, that offer you reflection, and give you hope. Release anger, frustration, and regret. Life can be heavy, and we need to make room for the light. Show the world your power and strength. Be the person to inspire, mentor and lift others up.”
Superintendent of Schools Scott Schoonmaker shared quotes from a speech given by actor Denzel Washington to university graduates.
Schoonmaker noted, “Denzel talks about failing, and I quote, ‘Fail big. That’s right, fail big. Take chances. Don’t be afraid to fail big. To dream big. But remember, dreams without goals are just dreams. Have dreams; but have goals.’”
In addition, Schoonmaker announced the second annual recipient of the NBHS Grit Award, given to a senior who’s overcome obstacles and helped make the school a better place for all. The 2023 NBHS Grit Award was presented to Dominick Langello.
“Dominick represents perseverance and a winning attitude after overcoming a couple of series setbacks,” said Schoonmaker. “He was impacted during his junior and senior years with season-ending injuries that took away something that he truly cherished and worked so hard toward. He never complained or felt sorry for himself. He mirrors Denzel Washington’s message about failing and not giving up.”
Speaking to the Class of 2023, Schoonmaker said, “I have personally witnessed the many outstanding qualities and attributes which your class possesses. Over the past four years you’ve succeeded as students, musicians, artists, athletes and most importantly, responsible citizens who have given back to your community and school by initiating and participating in many community-based events.”
He also advised, “...always listen more than you speak and never forget the inspirational people who have helped you to achieve your goals. Think back on your 13 years in North Branford, and the many opportunities you were given to thrive, live, and give and back.”
Schoonmaker officially confirmed that the 122 members of the Class of 2023 met all requirements to receive their high school diplomas.
Those graduating with distinction wore gold cords, and National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society members wore medallions. Students earning the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence were also recognized in the program. Recipients of additional awards listed in the program had their awards announced with their names when receiving diplomas.
During the presentation of diplomas and awards, NBHS and District Teacher of the Year Ryan Dombrowski was the reader. Diplomas were distributed by Schoonmaker, Holzer, and Stoeffler together with NBHS assistant principal Megan Lee; Class of 2023 advisor Melinda Balg; and Class of 2023 assistant advisor Eve Ostrowkski.
