Guilford Girls’ Tennis Wins State Title; Boys’ Lacrosse Cruises to Semifinals
Baseball
Guilford baseball began state tournament play as the No. 3 seed in Class L. In the first round on May 30, the Grizzlies faced No. 30 New London and won 11-4. The Whalers held a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before the Grizzlies scored four times to pull ahead. Bryce Meder earned the win on the mound by throwing six innings, giving up four hits, two earned runs and recording seven strikeouts. Alex Vincent went 4-for-4 with the go-ahead RBI and two runs scored, Sam Ametrano went 2-for-3 including a double, with three RBIs and two runs scored, and Carter Williams went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
In the second round the next day, Guilford defeated 19th-seeded Bethel in a close 6-5 contest. Both Sam Ametrano and Carter Williams went 3-for-3 in the game, with Ametrano scoring three runs, while Williams chalked up a RBI. Lucas Ametrano and Bryce Meder both recorded a hit and two RBIs each, with Ametrano’s hit being a double. Andrew Shosho pitched six innings and recorded the win for the Grizzlies.
Guilford moved onto the quarterfinals on June 3, where they shut out No. 22 Wethersfield 2-0. Sam Ametrano was on the bump in the contest to start, with Bryce Meder pitching the seventh inning to close out the game. The two pitchers combined for a shutout, with Meder striking out the side in the seventh to earn the save and Ametrano allowing just four hits and one walk to go with six strikeouts. Michael Buccaro hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the third inning.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Guilford girls’ lacrosse cruised through the first two rounds of Class M State Tournament action to put them in the semifinals. As the No. 3 seed, the Grizzlies faced No. 14 Waterford in the first round on May 30, grabbing a dominant 15-4 win. In the quarterfinals on June 1, they took down 11th-seeded Branford 15-4.
Softball
Guilford softball entered the Class L State Tournament as the No. 12 seed, where they took on No. 21 Ledyard in the first round on May 30 and won 10-1. The next day in the second round, Guilford faced 5th-seeded Windsor and lost a tight 4-3 contest to close out the season.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Guilford boys’ lacrosse qualified for the Class M State Tournament as the No. 4 seed. In the first round on May 31, the Grizzlies won a commanding 17-1 matchup vs. No. 13 Fitch before grabbing a 11-9 victory over 5th-seeded Xavier in the quarterfinals on June 3.
Girls’ Tennis
In the quarterfinal round of the Class L State Tournament on May 30, Guilford girls’ tennis recorded a 7-0 win over 5th-seeded Brookfield. Then the next day in the semifinals, No. 4 Guilford faced the top seed, Farmington, and recorded a 4-3 victory.
Guilford advanced to the final round on June 1, where they defeated 3rd-seeded Avon by a score of 4-3. Kallie Kagan recorded a win at No. 2 singles (7-5, 6-3) and No. 4 singles player Molly Peterson won 6-0, 6-3. On the doubles side, Alexie Gipson/Gabby Kellner recorded 7-5 and 7-6 wins, and Kate DeAngelo/Mia Hardy won 6-1, 6-1. Guilford finished the season with a record of 22-5.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team competed in the Class MM State Championship on June 1 at Willowbrook Park in New Britain and finished in 10th place with 29.2 points. The Grizzlies were led by junior Clara Gahm, who placed third in the 800 in 2:20.68 and fourth in the 1600 in 5:19.54. Senior Alexa Suchy was the runner-up in the 3200 with her personal best time of 11:21.22.
Senior Ella Esposito took fourth in the high jump in 4’10” with sophomore teammate Lily Sullivan tying for sixth place in 4’8”. Junior Tea Davison was ninth in the long jump in 15’1”. Other scorers were senior Olivia Kaisin (seventh in the 3200 in 12:15.27) and the girls’ 4x400 relay run by sophomores Daniella Selig, Agnes Batters, Ella Heckler and junior Juliana Montgomery, who finished seventh in 4:15.67. Esposito, Suchy and Gahm also qualified for the State Open Championship on June 5.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Guilford boys’ outdoor track team competed in the Class MM State Championship on June 1 at Willowbrook Park in New Britain, where they finished 13th as a team. Josh Chen came in third place in the 400 with a school record-setting time of 49.74. Andres Gutierrez came in fourth place in the 300 meter hurdles (40.04) and fourth in the triple jump (41-09.25). The 4x800 relay team (Alex Milano, Coleman Love, Bretton Garrick, Michael Masotti) came in fourth place (8:11.41) and the 4x400 team (Kyle Chen, Colin Lataillade, Max Freeman, Josh Chen) came in eighth place with a time of 3:30.87.
Boys’ Golf
Guilford boys’ golf competed in the Division I State Championship on June 5, placing sixth as a team with 334 points. Andrew Beauton, who was named to the All-Conference team this spring, finished in first place with a score of 70 on the course.
