Valley Regional High School (VRHS) students participated in Warrior in the Community Day on May 23.

Collectively, students accumulated over 1,650 hours of community service performing various tasks, including bottle and can collection from various spots in the tri-town area.

Around 75 bags of bottles and cans were collected during the day, according to Lenore Grunko of the Deep River CT Sustainable Committee. They were brought to MT Bottle Return redemption center in Middletown.

“[It was] a total of six trips, pick-up truck fulls of bottles,” said Grunko. “It’s so labor-intensive.”

Grunko said the $600 raised through recycling redemption will contribute to funds for the Tri-Town Sustainable Committees Food Scrap Composting and Education Campaign, with the goal of establishing food scrap programs in every school in the Region 4 School District.
