05/05/2023 08:57 AMPress Release, Town of Branford
The Town of Branford will transition from its current manual curbside trash and multi-stream recycling collection to automated collection of trash and single-stream “no-sort” recycling starting the week of July 1, 2023.
Eligible Branford residents will receive two free, specially designed, 95-gallon wheeled carts, one for trash and one for recycling. Eligible residences are households currently receiving curbside collection of trash and recycling services provided by the Town. The carts will be delivered curbside directly to your home between Tuesday, June 13 and Friday, June 30.
Beginning Saturday, July 1, both trash and recycling materials will be collected using the newly distributed wheeled carts. Residents are still required to separate trash from recyclables and place the materials into the correct carts distinguished by color. The dark gray carts are for trash and the blue carts are for recyclables. The new carts will be owned by the Town and will be purchased with American Rescue Plan federal funds and a grant from The Recycling Partnership, with support from the American Beverage’s Every Bottle Back initiative.
If a 95-gallon cart is too big for your household, you can elect to receive a smaller 65-gallon cart. To select a 65-gallon cart: Follow the instructions found on the mailer that is being sent to all to eligible residences the first week in May. Each mailer will have a unique, address-specific code needed to order a smaller 65-gallon cart. All requests for cart size changes must be made by Sunday, May 14, 2023. Residents that elect to receive a smaller cart cannot later request a free larger cart.
The new carts and automated collection vehicles operate as a unified system, therefore, residents must use the new trash and recycling carts after July 1. All materials placed at the curb after July 1 not placed in the new carts will not be collected and be the responsibility of the resident to dispose of properly.
It is highly recommended that residents keep their current trash containers and recycling bins for other purposes. However, options for collection, recycling and/or disposal of those plastic and metal containers will be established at a later date.
The new recycling carts allow residents to use a single-stream “no-sort” recycling method and will place all acceptable recyclable materials including paper; cardboard; glass, plastic, and metal containers into their new recycling carts. As before, do not use plastic bags to accumulate recyclable materials before they are put in the new blue carts. Plastic bags mixed with recyclable materials degrades the recycling process, and may produce penalty charges and increased costs to the town. The town expects the new single-stream “no-sort” recycling collection method and larger container size will greatly increase the town’s overall recycling volume.
More details regarding single-stream recycling will be posted on the town’s website: www.branford-ct.gov and attached to every recycling cart that will be distributed before the program is fully implemented, including reminders about the types of material that should not go into the recycling carts.
