New Automated Trash, Recycling Carts Headed to Branford Residents
In a community message posted this week, and in mailers going out from Branford Town Hall the first week of May, Branford residents are being notified that they will receive two, 95-gallon trash and recycling carts which are to be used when the Town’s new automated curbside collection of trash and recycling becomes effective as of July 1, 2023.
The new trash and recycling carts are free and will be delivered to all eligible residential addresses beginning Monday, June 12. Each eligible address will receive two specially designed 95-gallon carts, one for trash and one for “no-sort” (single stream) recycling of paper, cardboard, cans, glass, plastics etc.
Smaller, 65-gallon carts are being made available to those households where a 95-gallon cart would be too big. Instructions on the mailer that will be sent to all eligible residences the first week of May will include details for requesting 65-gallon carts. Requests for cart size changes must be made by Sunday, May 14. Residences which request smaller carts cannot later request a free, larger cart.
As previously reported, the Town created a new Solid Waste and Recycling Equipment sinking fund to support Branford’s transition from its current curbside trash and multi-stream recycling collection services, to the type of automated solid waste and single-stream recycling collection employed by most towns statewide.
The fund was approved by the Representative Town Meeting to be established with $925,000 from Branford’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars, together with approved Town budget transfers totaling $423,101 ($323,101 from capital budget transfer station improvements and $100,000 from general fund).
