Slate School Receives Arts Award
Press release from the Slate School
The Slate School in North Haven is thrilled to announce that it has received an award from the Jamie Hulley Arts Foundation to support the creative and artistic work of its students in their Oceania Project studies. This award comes with a $1,000 gift to support Slate School's arts-integrated student projects.
“Slate School is grateful to be recognized for its important focus on arts-integrated, curiosity-driven education,” said Jennifer Staple-Clark, founder and innovator at Slate School. “It is especially meaningful to honor the arts at Slate School in Jamie Hulley's memory.”
The Jamie Hulley Arts Foundation describes Hulley as “a creative soul who had the gift of seeing the world as a thing of beauty and of making all who knew her feel special.”
“It is only fitting that at Slate School, the languages of music, art, and movement are recognized and celebrated as not only meaningful, but essential tools for the expression of so much of our learning. Our students move fluidly across these disciplines, often using the arts to bridge disparate schools of thought and complex issues," said Julie Mountcastle, Head of School. "The creativity of Jamie Hulley continues to inspire us all.”
Each year, the students of Slate School engage in a continent study, where all students delve into something that especially intrigues them related to a particular continent. During April, all students at Slate School studied Oceania, with project topics ranging from food and New Zealand sign language to Sydney Opera House and music of Oceania. At Slate School, learning is built on interest, curiosity, experience, and connection.
The students of Slate School held their Oceania Project celebration on April 21. Families, friends, neighbors, community members, and the Jamie Hulley Arts Foundation joined in the celebration of the student’ learning and project work.
The Jamie Hulley Arts Foundation (https://jamiehulleyartsfund.org/) was created in 2002 in memory of Jamie Alaine Hulley. Its programs are centered around the singular goal of providing educational and professional development opportunities to young artists and early career professionals to expand their artistic talent and pursue their dreams.
