TJ Maxx Parent Company Files Signage Application
A signage application to the Town’s Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC) for 900 Boston Post Road has sparked rumors that a department store owned by TJX Companies, Inc., may be taking over the former Walmart storefront.
Since closing its doors last April, rumors have swirled about which business, if any, would replace the former Walmart storefront on Boston Post Road. While town officials declined to comment publicly, a signage permit filed by TJX Companies has been filed with Town Hall.
When Walmart closed its Guilford location in April 2022, immediate speculation began about what would replace the long-standing business. In June 2022, town officials announced TJ Maxx (TJX Companies, Inc.) and possibly one of its affiliate imprints would open separate facilities at the site, but that prospect never materialized.
While TJX Companies, Inc has applied for a new signage permit for the actual building via the PZC, town officials said that they are unaware of any lease agreement between the property’s management company and the corporation.
While the signage application is an integral step to the process of eventually opening a business, it does not guarantee that TJ Maxx will be the new tenant, according to town zoning officials.
TJ Maxx owns several brand names, including Marshalls and HomeGoods. TJ Maxx and Marshalls sell men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel and shoes, toys, bath and beauty, accessories, and home products ranging from furniture to kitchen utensils. HomeGoods sells furniture, linens, cooking products, art, and other home accessories, according to the company’s public relations department.
Last month, town officials announced that Chase Bank would construct and operate a stand-alone branch on the site. That project is separate from the actual storefront and space formerly utilized by Walmart and is slated to be built along the frontage area bordering Boston Post Road, where there is now a parking lot.
According to officials, that project is near approval and expected to break ground in the coming months.
