03/08/2023 04:04 PMOver 120 Chester Elementary School (CES) students participated in the CES STEAM Fair on March 2. This year’s fair showcased two months’ worth of student project exploration in science, technology, engineering, art and design, and math. The fair incorporated 4th grade engineering challenges, 5th and 6th grade science experiments, engineering challenges in domino design, safe landing, and catapult for 5th and 6th grade as well as Invention Convention for K-3 and 5-6 grades. Projects focused on CES' strategic goal of critical and creative problem-solving and incorporating engineering and design components of the next-generation science standards. Engineers from Nathan L. Jacobson and Associate and Whelen Engineering helped judge invention projects and provide real-world feedback to inventors.
In the inventors category, Luke Callahan was an honorable mention for the Snow Shuffle. Beau Decker for Dog Vac and Fluffy, Maddie Fisher for Page Turner, Mia Carrangelo for Lightening Clean, Jasper Stack for Tornado Pillow, and Brayden Alston for Easier Shovel were recommended Connecticut Invention Convention participants.
In the Science Experiment Category, Sofa Yumbla was awarded for excellence in scientific method, and Rose Maheu was awarded for art and design. In the Safe Landing category, Brooke Ouellette was awarded for art and design, and Lucille Larson was awarded for engineering excellence. For the Catapult category, Charles Germini received the art and design award, and Ryan Crotty was awarded for engineering excellence. In the Domino Challenge, the art and design award went to the team of Anna Ellis, Quinn Morris, and Dylan Sharp.
