Free Medical Equipment Available at Bennett’s Books
Bennett’s Books, 171 Main Street, Deep River, has added another community-minded project to its offerings, a medical equipment library.
Inspired by Charlie’s Closet in Guilford and other similar programs, Colin Bennett, founder and owner of Bennett’s Books, said, “the goal is to help make sure medical equipment is available to everyone, especially people most in need. With so many folks struggling just to make ends meet, an injury or illness can be debilitating, both physically and financially - this program aims to ease the burden.”
Bennett says the program is currently set to provide canes, crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, and some toilet and shower accessories to people across the lower Connecticut River Valley. In the future, Bennett hopes to include items like hospital beds, adult diapers, bed pads, and clean, gently used sheets.
“Right now, we are limited by lack of space; we can store some items at the store, and I can hold on to a few items at home, but for this program to have the impact it has the potential for, the bookstore will need a permanent home or someone else will have to host it.”
In the meantime, Bennett explained that the best way to request equipment is to call the bookstore and leave a message and that if the needed item is available, “we’ll give you a call and schedule a time and instructions for pickup.”
Although the items will be provided free of charge, donations will be accepted, and everyone receiving an item must sign a liability waiver. In some cases, delivery of equipment may be available.
In addition to seeking donations of clean medical equipment in good working order, volunteers are needed to help with maintenance, record-keeping, and other related tasks. Anyone interested in donating or volunteering should contact the bookstore.
“We definitely need a truck or van, too,” Bennett said.
