Funding to Protect Meals on Wheels From Power Outages

After decades of power outages and concerns over seniors not receiving food, The Estuary was grateful to receive funding from the Community Foundation of Middlesex County, Essex Community Fund, Guilford Savings Bank, Meals on Wheels America, the Nancy Fischbach and Martin Wolman Fund at the Community Foundation of Middlesex County, and Westbrook Foundation in order to purchase a generator. This multi-year project, delayed by supply chain issues, was finally completed this winter. The generator will help ensure that even during power outages, whether large or small, seniors will still receive the critical nutrition they need and the program will not suffer from food losses due to downed freezers. The Estuary expressed its gratitude to the community funders who helped make this project possible.

“Knowing that we have their support and that they will stand side by side with us as we fight food insecurity in our senior population is a gift,” said Heather Milardo, director of development and outreach for The Estuary.

The Estuary is a regional non-profit senior center in Old Saybrook that serves over 1,000 clients annually and provides over 80,000 meals through its nutrition program, including Meals on Wheels and Congregate Dining. This program is supported in part by the Senior Resources Agency on Aging with Title III funds made available under the Older Americans Act.
