Police have announced an arrest in a vehicle/bicycle accident that occurred on Nov. 12 along the 400-block stretch of Leetes Island Road. The accident closed roads in the area for several hours while police investigated, and the Guilford Police Department (GPD) credits a “good Samaritan” with possibly saving the victim’s life by rendering immediate aid.

The bicyclist, identified as John Bysiewicz, is the brother of Connecticut Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz. Bysiewicz is the owner of JB Sports which runs bike races such as the Faxon Law New Haven Road Race held in September.

Guilford Police said Bysiewicz sustained “significant injuries that were potentially life-threatening.” The collision happened about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the 400-block of Leetes Island Road, police said.

According to Guilford Police, the vehicle that struck Bysiewicz fled the scene of the accident and another driver observed the victim lying by the side of the road and stopped to render aid and call 911. Police credit the bystander with possibly saving Bysiewicz's life by responding so quickly to the emergency.

Police said they later received information that a Branford resident was involved in the incident and were able to locate the driver, arresting R. Neal Stom, 30, of Branford. Stom was charged with evading responsibility and later posted $100,000 bail.

GPD is asking homeowners and business owners with property on Route 146 between the intersection of Leetes Island Road at Sachems Head Road in Guilford to Limewood Avenue in Branford to check for the existence of surveillance footage that may capture roadway traffic during the timeframe of 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 12. The section of Route 146 in Branford includes part of Leetes Island Road, Stony Creek Road, Totoket Road, part of Pine Orchard Road, Elizabeth Street, and part Hotchkiss Grove Road.
