Goss Named Next Assistant Superintendent for GPS

At a special meeting on Nov. 3, the Guilford Board of Education, by unanimous vote, approved the appointment of Amity S. Goss, Ed.D. as the next Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for Guilford Public Schools (GPS). This past July, Dr. Annine Crystal retired from this position to pursue a role in higher education.

For the past seven years, Goss has served as Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment in the Old Saybrook Public Schools. She began her tenure as an elementary school teacher in Old Saybrook before moving to Colchester Public Schools and advancing from literacy specialist to assistant principal to principal. Goss completed her undergraduate course work in child development at Connecticut College, received her M.S. in remedial reading from Central Connecticut State University, Sixth Year Certificate in educational leadership from Sacred Heart University, and her doctorate in curriculum, teaching, learning and leading from Northeastern University.

Colleagues describe Goss as “a strong educational leader with clear goals and strategies to improve teaching and learning,” and “an invaluable asset to any school community with her innovative, supportive nature in her never-ending pursuit to do what’s best for students.”

Superintendent of Schools Paul Freeman shared his enthusiasm about the new member of the district’s leadership team:

“We had an impressive pool of candidates who applied for this position, and we interviewed several qualified individuals. Our district is extremely fortunate Dr. Goss will be joining us and sharing her deep knowledge of high quality instructional environments and her commitment to fostering a culture of learning among teachers and students. I look forward to collaborating with this thoughtful leader as we work together to ensure our schools are equitable, caring and safe places for learning; that all students are engaged in academically rigorous tasks; and that our work aligns with our new Portrait of a Graduate.”

Newly appointed Assistant Superintendent Goss states:

“Ensuring that all students have access to a high-quality public school education that prepares them for citizenship in a global society is the work of our time. As I’ve met with educators and community members throughout the interview process, I’ve been increasingly impressed with the intellectual curiosity and dedication to ongoing learning demonstrated at every level. I look forward to working with and learning from the Guilford community.”

The district is grateful for the leadership of Jody Goeler who is currently serving as Interim Assistant Superintendent. Goss will begin her tenure with GPS Jan. 17, 2023.
