11/13/2022 08:51 AMAmong the town’s 7 voting districts, Branford supported Democratic candidates by majority vote across the entire state election ballot on Nov. 8. Of Branford’s 21,458 registered voters, a total of 15,527 voters cast their ballots, or 63.38 percent.
In Branford-based races, voters returned incumbent Democratic State Representative Robin Comey to the 102nd District House seat and incumbent Senator Christine Cohen back to her 12th District seat. Both Comey and Cohen have won a third consecutive term in Hartford.
In the race for the open seat for the town’s 98th State Representative district, vacated by the night’s winning Democratic State Comptroller candidate Sean Scanlon, Democrat Moira Rader prevailed.
Branford voters selected Democrat Chuck Tiernan as the next Judge of Probate representing the 35th District of Branford-North Branford.
In the Nov. 8 District 12 state senate race, Cohen earned 7,396 Branford votes over 5,662 votes Branford gave to Republican challenger Paul Crisci. Based on votes in all District 12 towns (North Branford, Branford, Durham, Guilford, Killingworth and Madison), Cohen was reelected with 27,319 total votes. Crisci garnered a total of 21,562 votes district-wide.
In the race for the for the 102nd seat, which represents most of Branford, voters reelected Comey with 5,991 votes to best the 4,556 votes received by Republican challenger Ray Ingraham.
Pine Orchard/Stony Creek voters represented by the 98th District State Representative elected Rader with 1,572 votes over GOP challenger Richard Dinardo, who earned 1,213 votes in Branford. Rader won the overall 98th District (Guilford-Branford) vote with a tally of 7,905 over 4,694 votes for Dinardo.
In the election to determine District 35’s next Judge of Probate due to the retirement of Judge Frank Forgione, Tiernan earned 7,624 Branford votes over Republican candidate Al Ippolito, who received 5,604 votes in Branford. Results among all District 35 votes (Branford/North Branford) elected Tiernan to the post with a total of 10,013 votes over Ippolito’s total of 9,299.
Speaking with Zip06/The Sound shortly after earning her win on election night, Comey said she was grateful for the support of voters and looking forward to returning to Hartford to continue to work hard for all of her constituents.
“Today was the culmination of all the hard work that I’ve put in throughout my past four years, helping constituents and listening to them, and developing relationships with them,” said Comey. “I’m just glad that people have put their faith in me, and have trusted me with continuing to be their state representative. I’m thrilled.”
